Rome is a museum you can walk through. Three days lets you see the big names without rushing, if you group them by area. Wear comfortable shoes: you will walk a lot on old paving.
Day 1 — Ancient Rome
1. The Colosseum, Forum and Palatine Hill
These sights sit close together. Go early to avoid the heat and the queues, and check whether a combined ticket is offered on the official site. Spend the afternoon around Monti for a relaxed lunch and a walk.

St Peter's Basilica and the Vatican Museums are in the same area but have separate entrances and rules, including a dress code for visitors. Plan the morning for them and book tickets ahead on the official sites.
Cross the river in the afternoon to Trastevere, a village-like district with narrow streets and many places to eat in the evening.
Day 3 — Pantheon, Trevi and the squares
2. The historic centre on foot
Start at the Pantheon, then walk to Piazza Navona and the Trevi Fountain, which is busiest in the middle of the day. Finish at the Spanish Steps, or with a quiet walk in Villa Borghese park.
